a blustery start to the season

The season is winter, or at least it appears to be. This is day three of windy wet and cold. Today the wind is lighter, the sky isn’t. The leaves have been blown away, out to the field. There were snow flakes mixed in the rain yesterday. There hasn’t been a hard frost here, yet.

I wore the Big Green Coat to the mailbox yesterday.

significance? Unknown, although it seems rain in fall, after a summer of rain, seems redundant and less than celebratory. by nature, rain is damp.

last night hauling groceries from the truck to the house I thought the rain was particularly wet. each rain drop saturating a bit more of my shirt than usual. was this because the atmosphere was already stewing in dampness and the dry cloth of my shirt attracted wetness like a sponge? absorbing not only the rain drop but the atmospheric moistness around it? or was the molecular structure of the rain drop somewhat looser than it would be had it been a dry hot day?

it was/ is a sloppy rain, a continous drip/mist that is predicted to go on all day. 1-4 inches of rain in our part of the world. flash floods possible.

driving home in the rain, rain falling on hard tar surfaces and staying there, I decided the truck might need new tires before winter and snow. or I need to learn to drive in slippery conditions once again.

so long at the fair

At the fair or at work or at some place other than my desk. I do spend a fair amount of time at my desk, but little of it I spend looking out the window. It is summer and in summer it is better to be outside and not inside looking out. Although the heat and humidity has driven me inside more than I would like. But now fall approaches and the weather is fine, still a little too warm, but the signs are here that all will begin turning once again. Including me, adding a job (happy days), school, and several new projects and adventures to keep me busy. Too busy for contemplation, too busy for reading, too busy for so many things. Still plenty of time to do what I want to do and wish to do and love to do. There is no shortage of time, it is all a matter of planning and coordination.

thats how long we go between major rain storms. three days. two days to build up steam and clouds and one day to drain the atmosphere. then it starts all over again. the vegetation is so green. squash in the garden are growing as though in the garden of eden, or the garden of the little shop of horrors, or wherever the conditions allow for lush, lush growth. the rain forest. is there a rain plain? Spain?

so far the winds have remained light. no windstorms to bring down the trees, which are anchored by roots swimming in more water than usual. the end of july and the ground should be dry and gritty. instead we have mud and squishiness.

no complaints, just observations. an overcast sky with chances of storms again this evening.

It is a beautiful day in the neighborhood. Sunny, calm, not too humid. Yet. Hummingbirds are visiting the feeder above my chair, letting me know they would prefer to sip in private. I should go in, have breakfast, get dressed, and go out to the garden. This morning will be perfect for clearing the weeds that have grown enormous while the weather was hot and muggy. Which is sure to return soon. It is July.

June doldrums

90 degrees and sunny. Humidity hovering at tropical. After a week of northern rain and clouds it is hard to move from the house, the air conditioner, and the chair. Walking to the mailbox was steamy. Filling the bird baths, sticky. The vegetation is lush and green and overwhelming. I look out the window and see bright sun, birds flying and the hint of a breeze riffling through the trees. I drift around the house on the dry cool air streams from a machine that sweats so I don’t.

Leap frogging weather

Let’s see. March was cold, april was warm. May is cold and rainy, so June should be warm.

No one can predict the weather more than a few days ahead.

Trends are just that, trends, possibilities, wishes and hopes.

Wake up in the morning and plan the day by what you see out the window.

Work with what is, and stop wishing, hoping for something different in the future.

Marching towards spring

Today: first laundry drying on the lines outside.

Snowbanks nearly gone.

Yard soggy, slimy, and grim looking.

Windows need washing, and I am considering bringing out the screens.

Today I should start some seedlings. But what? I need to check the seed packets in the basement.

Yesterday: 64 degrees in the afternoon. Macarthur and I walked the corn field behind the house. Muddy, wet, and so many deer tracks. As I assumed they are coming up the ravine. Shrubs are decimated. Very sad looking evergreens in the yard.

It started this afternoon. A light rain, after a day of fog. There is still a lot of snow on the ground. This rain, predicted to last for two days should cut the snow piles down to nothing. An early spring? I am not holding my breath.
